Trotwood medical practice expanding to second Dayton location

Marquetta Colbert, owner of Colbert Family Health & Wellness, said she plans to open her new office at 111 Turner Road in Harrison Township shortly after Thanksgiving. Renovations are currently underway at the nearly 3,000-square-foot facility, which was formerly occupied by Premier Health.
“It’s already designed as a medical office — it just needed updated,” Colbert told me. “It’s going to be a primary care office treating both children and adults for common health problems in addition to wellness visits and annual physicals.”
The new building, located just seven miles from Colbert’s existing location, will incorporate all the services she currently offers in Trotwood — including preventive health services and on-site labs for Covid-19 testing and antibody screening.

Despite being a small medical practice, Colbert Family Health & Wellness was one of the first organization in the region to provide Covid-19 testing.
The Trotwood-based healthcare company, which is a finalist for the DBJ’s Woman-Owned Business award, started offering testing in March. Owner Marquetta Colbert said they were providing this testing before any of the largest healthcare systems in the region.
“I’m proud as a small business owner that I was able to provide Covid testing very early on,” Colbert said. “I had people coming to me in March at the onset of the Covid outbreak to get testing at our office. I was very proud to be able to provide that service and provide the education early on to my patients and to the community, even those who weren’t my patients.”
When asked how she was able to offer testing so early in the outbreak, Colbert said she used her connections at a national lab that was one of the first organization in the country to offer this service.
“I just contacted them early to make sure we had everything we needed,” she said. “We were of the first ones to have everything.”

Along with testing, Colbert said she acquired personal protective equipment, or PPE, as well as other supplies to ensure patient and employee safety. She also established Covid-related policies and never had to shut down during the pandemic.
“Early on, I provided alternative types of visits, whether it be in the car or telehealth visits,” she said. “We also remained open during the whole time for people who still wanted the experience of being in the facility.”
Colbert said she provided testing to around 50 people during the first month of the pandemic. She continues to offer both Covid screening and antibody testing to this day.
Pandemic Could be Worsening Childhood Obesity in Ohio

Pandemic Could be Worsening Childhood Obesity in Ohio
Originally posted on Dayton Daily News, February 17, 2021.
Nearly 1 in 7 children between the ages of 10 and 17 in Ohio are considered obese and health experts are concerned the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic is only making matters worse.
Activities have been limited and even stopped completely by some pandemic protocols that have kept most people indoors and limiting their options for physical activity, including children.
“They’re all on a computer doing the schoolwork or playing games so they’re more sedentary, and all of that is just going to increase the weight for children,” said Marquetta Colbert, nurse practitioner and owner of Colbert Family Health and Wellness in Trotwood.
Obesity at any age puts people at risk for heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and asthma, which are all underlying health issues that make contracting COVID-19 easier and beating it that much harder.
Colbert said although the death rate is lower for children COVID-19, weight has played a factor in children that have died due to the virus.
Child obesity is described as children and adolescents who are over the standard weight for their height and age range. In Ohio, 15.7% of children between the ages of 10 and 17 were considered obese, according to a 2018-2019 study by the National Survey of Children’s Health.
“Childhood obesity remains an epidemic in this country,” said Jamie Bussel of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, which funds the National Survey of Children’s Health.
Ohio did see a slight decrease in the percentage of obese children from 17.1% between 2016-2017 and the 15.7% in 2018-2019, but the pandemic may have reversed the state’s progress.
“During the time of the pandemic, I think it made it worse and I think it increased the numbers of obesity. I think when the pandemic is over, we will have to work harder to get back to what little bit of gains that we did have,” Colbert said.
